Falconets Face Race Against Time as Visa Crisis Puts Key Players’ World Cup Participation in Doubt
Nigeria’s Falconets have been thrown into a major late setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with captain Joy Igbokwe and defender Faridat Abdulwahab unable to travel with the squad to Poland because of unresolved visa problems.
The Nigerian team has already arrived in Poland to continue preparations for the tournament, but the absence of key players has created uncertainty just days before the competition begins. Earlier reports also indicated that another player, Sandra John, was affected by the visa difficulties, although the latest reports have focused on Igbokwe and Abdulwahab.
The situation is particularly frustrating because the Falconets had successfully secured their place at the global tournament and are expected to represent Nigeria among Africa’s leading teams. Nigeria has a strong history at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, having reached the final twice, in 2010 and 2014.
The 2026 tournament will be held in Poland from September 5 to September 27. Nigeria will begin its group-stage campaign against Spain on September 7 before facing China and then New Caledonia.
With preparations already underway in Poland, the immediate priority is resolving the outstanding visa issues so the affected players can join their teammates as soon as possible. The absence of the captain in particular could be significant, given her leadership role within the squad.
The visa crisis has also raised concerns about the timing of Nigeria’s travel arrangements. With the World Cup approaching rapidly, there is limited time for the affected players to obtain clearance, travel to Poland and settle into the team before the opening match.
For now, the Falconets remain focused on preparing with the players who have arrived in Poland. But the unresolved visa situation has added an unwanted complication to Nigeria’s World Cup preparations, with hopes that the affected players will still be able to join the squad before the tournament gets underway.
