Ed Sheeran Breaks Down on Stage and Says “I’m Sorry” Over Macklemore Tour Controversy

Ed Sheeran has apologised to fans and admitted he made “mistakes” as he returned to the stage for the first time since the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his US tour. The British singer addressed the issue at his Philadelphia concert on Saturday, September 19, telling the audience that the past week had forced him into difficult decisions and placed him at the centre of a wider debate over free speech and the war in Gaza. Sheeran became visibly emotional as he spoke about the uncertainty surrounding his tour and his future as a performer.

“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry,” Sheeran told the crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. He said he did not want to disappoint his fans and had never intended to become an “activist musician”, but found himself caught up in what he described as one of the most complex political issues in the world.

The controversy began after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks during his performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey earlier this month. He performed his protest song Hind’s Hall and spoke in support of Palestinians, including calling for a “Free Palestine”. Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remaining dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour.

Sheeran has previously said the decision was made by the tour promoter after venues indicated they could withdraw from upcoming shows if Macklemore remained on the line-up. He denied being responsible for the rapper’s removal and said he had his own personal views on the conflict but did not want his concerts to become political forums.

The decision triggered another wave of disruption when several supporting acts, including Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Finneas, withdrew from the remaining shows. Sheeran’s backing band, Beoga, also stepped away, expressing support for Macklemore’s position.

During the Philadelphia concert, Sheeran also spoke more directly about the conflict itself. He described the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, as horrific, while calling the situation in Gaza “catastrophic and unjustifiable” and expressing concern about civilian deaths and suffering. Reuters reported that his remarks represented a shift from his earlier insistence that his concerts should remain outside political debate.

The upheaval has affected the Philadelphia show and the wider tour. The concert’s start time was pushed back, Sheeran performed without his usual supporting acts, and protests were held outside the stadium, with demonstrators calling for greater attention to the situation in Gaza.

For Sheeran, the Philadelphia performance became more than just another tour date. It was his first opportunity to speak publicly since the Macklemore dispute erupted, and his emotional comments showed the personal pressure created by a controversy that has moved well beyond music and into the wider debate over artists, free speech and political expression.
