The opening week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has belonged to football’s biggest stars. Across stadiums in the United States, Mexico and Canada, elite players have already begun producing the goals, performances and memorable moments that fans expect on the sport’s grandest stage.

Yet one of football’s most iconic figures, Cristiano Ronaldo, left his World Cup opener still searching for that defining moment.

Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo was one of the tournament’s earliest surprises. Entering the match, Portugal were widely regarded as clear favourites. Their squad boasts some of Europe’s finest talents, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and João Neves, while Ronaldo remains the face of the team despite entering the tournament at 41 years old. Portugal were also expected to have too much quality for a Congolese side making its first World Cup appearance in more than five decades.

The match initially appeared to be following the expected script. João Neves gave Portugal an early lead in the sixth minute, and many anticipated the floodgates would open. Instead, DR Congo gradually grew into the contest, defending with discipline and refusing to be overawed by their illustrious opponents. Their persistence paid off when Yoane Wissa scored a historic equaliser just before halftime, registering DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal.

For Ronaldo, the evening was not the headline-making occasion many supporters had envisioned.

The Portuguese captain entered the tournament having already made history as the first outfield player to start a World Cup match at the age of 41 and the first player to appear in six World Cups. Such milestones only heightened expectations that another memorable performance could follow.

Instead, Ronaldo endured a not so good night in front of goal. Closely marked by the Congolese defence, he was unable to convert the chances that came his way, while Portugal struggled to create the type of opportunities that have often allowed their captain to flourish. Despite dominating possession, Portugal wasn’t able to register another shot on target after their opening goal and were left settling for a point.

What made the performance stand out even more was the wider context of the tournament.

Fans have already watched some of football’s most celebrated names step forward for their countries. Around the competition, established stars and rising talents alike have delivered goals, assists and match-winning displays that have quickly placed them at the centre of World Cup conversations. Every tournament produces players who immediately seize the spotlight, and this year’s edition has been no different.

That reality inevitably creates greater anticipation around players such as Ronaldo. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for delivering in the biggest moments, whether for Portugal, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus or Al Nassr. Supporters have become accustomed to seeing him respond when expectations are highest.

Against DR Congo, however, the spotlight belonged elsewhere.

Wissa’s goal secured a historic result for the African nation, while DR Congo’s organised defensive performance wasn’t a good look for one of the tournament favourites. Coach Sébastien Desabre later praised his team’s mental strength and tactical discipline, qualities that allowed them to earn their first-ever World Cup point.

For Portugal, the draw is far from a sad ending. Group-stage football often produces unexpected results, and the squad remains one of the strongest in the competition. But the performance served as a reminder that no team can rely solely on reputation, regardless of the stars on the team sheet.

As the tournament progresses, attention will naturally return to Ronaldo because football fans have spent more than two decades watching him respond to challenges and rewrite expectations. With Portugal still aiming for a deep run, many supporters believe their captain’s defining World Cup moment may simply be waiting for the right stage.
