The journey to the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards 12 kicked in grand style, as well-heeled, high-profile guests and members of the media gathered for an exclusive press conference at the MultiChoice headquarters in Lagos. From the very first moment, it was clear that this wasn’t just another announcement; it was the opening chapter of Africa’s most prestigious celebration of film and television, a platform that continues to honour creativity, culture, and storytelling across the continent.
Hosted by actor and producer Ariyike Olowolagba, the atmosphere was fully electrified, alive with anticipation and excitement. The room glowed with the presence of industry heavyweights such as Joke Silva, Gloria Young, Ireti Doyle, Ibrahim Suleiman, Linda Suleiman, and many others, each one a testament to the thriving ecosystem of African cinema. It felt less like a formal press event and more like a reunion of storytellers bound by a shared passion.
As the biggest celebration of movies and television in Africa, the AMVCAs has maintained its Pan-African identity, bringing together voices and visions from across the continent. Speaking on what to expect at AMVCA 12, Atinuke Ngozi Babatunde, Executive Head of Content and Channels at MultiChoice Nigeria, painted a picture that goes far beyond the glamour. She noted that behind the lights, the red carpet, and the applause lies a deeper narrative, one that celebrates the creativity and craftsmanship of both cast and crew.
According to her, this year will further strengthen that vision, with an international recognition of Africa’s creative ecosystem. It will celebrate culture and African stories in all their richness and authenticity, while expanding the scope of inclusion. The AMVCA 12 will introduce more regional representation in its categories, ensuring broader recognition of talent and storytelling from different parts of the continent.
She also announced a significant strategic upgrade—MultiChoice’s partnership with Diageo, with this year’s edition headlined by Don Julio. But as she explained, this goes beyond sponsorship. It is a collaboration rooted in a shared belief in excellence and craftsmanship, aimed at creating premium experiences that resonate deeply with audiences. From the nominees’ announcement on March 29 to the opening of voting, the Icon Night, Young Filmmakers Day, Cultural Day, and the grand award night, the lineup promises an unforgettable celebration.
Newly appointed Head Judge for AMVCA 12, multiple award-winning actress Joke Silva, spoke with both gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Being entrusted with leading the jury, she acknowledged how far the AMVCAs has come over the years, evolving into a cultural institution that not only recognizes but celebrates excellence in African film and television.
She highlighted the introduction of new categories spotlighting North and Central Africa, a move that will expand the awards’ reach and reflect the true depth and diversity of storytelling across the continent. Speaking on the jury’s role, she assured that the process will uphold the highest standards of fairness, credibility, and professional integrity, values that have become synonymous with the AMVCAs brand.
As anticipation builds, AMVCA 12 is set not only to reward visibility and popularity but also to honour the depth of craft and the mastery of storytelling that continues to elevate African cinema on the global stage. Because at its core, this is more than an award show, it is a powerful reminder that African stories matter, and through the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, those stories, rich, brilliant, and diverse, will continue to shine.
