Pope Leo XIV has received encouraging news about his health after doctors confirmed that he will not require further cancer treatment following surgery to remove a cancerous portion of his right lung. The Vatican announced on October 21, 2026, that medical tests showed the cancer had remained localised and had not spread, marking a positive development in the 71-year-old pontiff’s recovery.
The pope underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 13 after doctors discovered a lung nodule during medical examinations. Laboratory tests subsequently confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer. Following further assessments, his medical team concluded that the affected tissue had been removed successfully and that additional cancer therapy was unnecessary.
Pope Leo was discharged from hospital on October 17, just four days after the operation. His recovery has since allowed him to begin returning to public engagements, including his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square on October 21. During the gathering, he greeted pilgrims and thanked supporters whose prayers and messages had accompanied him through the health scare.
The latest announcement offers reassurance to Catholics around the world, although the pope will still need time to recover fully and undergo medical follow-up. Doctors have indicated that his condition does not currently require further cancer treatment, but his recovery from surgery remains an important consideration.
Attention has also turned to his planned South American visit from November 6 to 17, with stops expected in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. While his medical team has suggested that travel may be possible, the demanding schedule could be adjusted depending on his progress. The Vatican’s latest update therefore provides hope about his health, while questions remain about how quickly he can resume the full responsibilities of the papacy.
