Lake Tanganyika Boat Disaster Leaves at Least 41 Dead as Rescue Teams Search for Missing Passengers

At least 41 people have died after a boat travelling from Tanzania to the Democratic Republic of Congo capsized on Lake Tanganyika, with rescue teams continuing to search for passengers still missing.

The vessel was carrying about 100 people along with cargo when it overturned near the Congolese village of Mapera on Thursday. It was travelling from Kigoma in Tanzania to Kalemie in DR Congo’s Tanganyika province. Provincial authorities said 49 people had been rescued, while the final number of passengers remains unclear.

A survivor said passengers were awakened at around 1am and discovered that the boat was tilting to one side before it capsized. Authorities have not yet established what caused the accident, and search operations remain focused on finding those who may still be in the water or missing.

The tragedy highlights continuing concerns over water transport safety in DR Congo, where boats are an important means of travel, particularly in areas where roads are limited or poorly developed. Previous investigations into deadly accidents have identified recurring problems including overcrowding, inadequate safety standards and a lack of life jackets.

The latest disaster also comes after several other deadly incidents involving Congolese vessels this year. In July, at least 20 people died when a wooden boat carrying students returning from state examinations sank in central DR Congo. Just weeks before the Lake Tanganyika disaster, the Congolese vessel MV Pacifique caught fire and exploded while loading fuel at Kigoma, killing six crew members and leaving another missing.

The Kigoma-Kalemie route has therefore seen two major vessel disasters in less than a month, increasing scrutiny of safety conditions on one of the region’s important transport links. Lake Tanganyika itself is one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes and is also the second deepest, making rescue operations particularly challenging.

The latest death toll could rise as authorities continue searching for those unaccounted for. The cause of the capsizing and whether overloading, vessel condition or other factors played a role will likely be central to any investigation into the disaster.
