Clearlake Capital has taken full control of Chelsea Football Club after agreeing to acquire the stakes held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, marking a major change in the ownership structure of the Premier League club.
The US private equity firm, which was already Chelsea’s majority shareholder, has bought the remaining interests held by Boehly and Walter in a deal reported to be worth around £950 million ($1.27 billion). Boehly will also step down as Chelsea chairman following the transaction.
The change comes four years after the consortium involving Clearlake, Boehly, Walter and Hansjörg Wyss purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022 for about £4.25 billion. Clearlake held the largest share of the club under that arrangement, while Boehly and Walter became prominent figures in the club’s leadership and public profile.
Chelsea’s ownership period under the consortium has been characterised by significant spending on players and investment across the club. The latest restructuring follows reports of differences among the ownership partners over the club’s direction, with Clearlake now positioned to exercise full control over the business.
Despite the change at ownership level, Chelsea is not expected to undergo an immediate change in its day-to-day operations or overall strategy. The club has indicated that its existing leadership structure and strategic plans will continue following the transaction.
Boehly’s departure brings an end to his formal leadership role at Stamford Bridge, although his four-year tenure included major changes to Chelsea’s squad and operations. Clearlake’s control now places the investment firm at the centre of decisions concerning the club’s future, including sporting investment and major infrastructure plans.
