Nairobi Makes History as Kenya Wins 2029 World Athletics Championships in First African Edition

Nairobi has been chosen to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, making Kenya the first African country to stage the senior global athletics championships since the competition began in 1983.

World Athletics announced the decision on September 15, selecting Nairobi ahead of bids from London and Rome. Munich was awarded the 2031 championships. The decision is a major milestone for Kenya and African athletics, particularly because the continent has long produced some of the world’s leading track and field athletes without previously hosting the senior global championships.

The competition is expected to be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi’s main athletics stadium. The venue is undergoing upgrades as Kenya prepares to host other major sporting events. World Athletics said Nairobi’s bid included government and financial guarantees, as well as plans aimed at growing the sport and strengthening the championship’s reach in Africa.

Kenya has a strong record of producing elite athletes, particularly in middle- and long-distance running. Olympic and world champions such as Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon have helped make the country one of athletics’ most recognised nations. Kenya has also hosted the 2017 World Under-18 Championships and the 2021 World Under-20 Championships, giving organisers experience with major international competitions.

Nairobi had previously bid to host the 2025 World Championships but lost to Tokyo. The 2027 edition will be held in Beijing before the championships move to Africa in 2029.

The successful bid also comes with responsibilities. Kenya will need to ensure that stadium renovations, transport, accommodation, security and other infrastructure meet World Athletics requirements. The country has also faced international scrutiny over doping, although authorities have increased funding for testing and education and World Athletics has acknowledged efforts to strengthen Kenya’s anti-doping system.

Beyond the competition itself, Nairobi 2029 is expected to have a wider impact on African sport. Hosting the championships could attract international visitors, create opportunities for local athletes and officials, and encourage greater investment in athletics infrastructure across the region.
