Kyiv Hit by Deadly Russian Missile and Drone Strikes as At Least 12 People Are Killed and 20 Others Injured Overnight

At least 12 people have been killed and 20 others injured following overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks hit several locations, including a railway depot in the capital where six workers were among the casualties.

Eight people were reported killed in Kyiv, with fires breaking out across three districts. Another four people died in the nearby town of Boryspil after a residential building was struck. Ukrainian authorities said two children were among those injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said hundreds of emergency workers were involved in rescue operations through the night. He said Russia launched a large number of drones and ballistic missiles against Kyiv and several other regions.

Russia said the strikes targeted Ukrainian military and energy infrastructure, describing them as a “massive strike” using high-precision weapons. Moscow also reported casualties from Ukrainian attacks, saying one person was killed in the western Russian region of Belgorod.

The latest attacks came after several consecutive days of Russian strikes on Kyiv. Ukrainian officials say the sustained attacks are putting additional pressure on the country’s air-defence systems while increasing the strain on civilians.

The violence also followed a renewed appeal from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. Speaking at a security summit in Kyrgyzstan, Modi said every additional day of fighting was a setback for humanity and called for continued movement towards peace.

India maintains close economic ties with Russia and remains a major buyer of discounted Russian oil, but Modi has repeatedly urged Putin to seek an end to the conflict since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The latest strikes also come days after a deadly attack on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region killed 38 people and triggered secondary explosions involving shells, mines and drones.

Meanwhile, Ukraine carried out another reported drone attack on Russia, with a strike hitting the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga and causing a fire. The major port handles large volumes of petroleum products, making it an important part of Russia’s energy infrastructure.

As the fighting continues, the latest attacks underline the growing risks faced by civilians on both sides, while international calls for an end to the war continue alongside escalating military strikes.
