UK Councillor Charged Over Alleged Racist Social Media Post Targeting Nigerians, as Hate Speech Case Heads to Court

A councillor in the United Kingdom has been formally charged over an alleged racist social media post targeting Nigerians, in a case that has reignited debate about hate speech, public accountability and political standards in British public office.

Glenn Gibbins, a Reform UK councillor representing Hylton Castle in Sunderland, has been charged under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 for allegedly publishing a grossly offensive message on social media in 2024. According to Northumbria Police, the charge follows an investigation that began after the post was brought to officers’ attention in May 2026, shortly after Gibbins was elected to Sunderland City Council. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) later authorised the charge, and Gibbins is scheduled to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on 21 August.

The case centres on a social media post in which Gibbins allegedly made a deeply offensive remark about Nigerians living in Sunderland. The comment drew widespread condemnation after resurfacing following his election, prompting criticism from community groups, political figures and anti-racism campaigners. Police have urged the public not to speculate while legal proceedings are ongoing.

The controversy first erupted in May after campaign group Hope Not Hate highlighted the post during the local election period. Reform UK initially suspended Gibbins while conducting an internal disciplinary process. About a month later, however, the party reinstated him after issuing a final written warning and accepting his apology, in which he reportedly acknowledged that the post demonstrated poor judgement. The decision to readmit him attracted criticism from opposition politicians, who questioned whether the disciplinary action was sufficient given the seriousness of the remarks.

Following the criminal charge, Reform UK said it was aware of the legal proceedings and would monitor the outcome of the case. The party has not indicated whether any further disciplinary measures will be taken before the court process concludes.

The charge comes amid increasing scrutiny of social media conduct by elected officials in the UK. Public office holders are expected to uphold standards of integrity and avoid language that could incite hatred or undermine public confidence. Cases involving offensive online posts have increasingly resulted in criminal investigations where authorities believe the legal threshold for prosecution has been met.

While Gibbins has now been charged, the allegations remain subject to the judicial process, and the court will ultimately determine whether any criminal offence has been committed. His appearance before magistrates next month is expected to mark the next significant stage in a case that has attracted national attention and sparked renewed discussion about racism, political accountability and responsible conduct in public life.
