Six Years After Chadwick Boseman’s Death, Marvel Finally Reveals The Next Black Panther And The Future Of Wakanda

Marvel Studios has officially introduced British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, marking the franchise’s biggest casting announcement since the death of Chadwick Boseman. Director Ryan Coogler unveiled the casting during Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, confirming that Jonsson will play T’Challa II—the son of the late King T’Challa—in Black Panther 3, which is scheduled for release in December 2028.

The announcement comes nearly six years after Boseman’s death, an event that changed the direction of one of Marvel’s most successful franchises. Boseman, who first played King T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War before starring in Black Panther and two Avengers films, died on 28 August 2020 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer. He was 43. His death shocked fans around the world, as very few people outside his inner circle knew he had been battling the disease.

Rather than recast Boseman’s version of T’Challa, Marvel chose to honour his legacy. Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige decided not to replace the actor, rewriting 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to focus on the kingdom mourning its king. The film saw Shuri become the new Black Panther while also revealing that T’Challa had a young son, T’Challa II, with Nakia.

That storyline has now paved the way for the future of the franchise. Instead of replacing Boseman’s character, David Jonsson will portray an older T’Challa II, allowing Marvel to continue the royal bloodline while preserving Boseman’s legacy.

Jonsson has emerged as one of Britain’s fastest-rising actors through standout performances in Industry, Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus. His growing reputation, coupled with his recent BAFTA Rising Star Award, made him one of the industry’s most sought-after young talents.

The casting has received mixed reactions. Many fans have welcomed Marvel’s decision to continue T’Challa’s story through his son rather than recast Boseman’s character, while others still believe the original T’Challa should have been recast years ago.

With Black Panther 3 now moving forward, Marvel believes it has found a balance between honouring Chadwick Boseman’s unforgettable contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and ensuring the Black Panther legacy continues for a new generation.
