Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he cannot be certain he will contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, revealing that his biggest concern is whether he will even be alive by then. Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Obi said the challenges facing opposition politicians have made the political environment increasingly difficult.

Responding to a question about his 2027 ambition, Obi said, “I might not even be alive,” stressing that his focus is not on political ambition but on Nigeria’s future. He also alleged that his businesses have been deliberately targeted and frustrated because of his political involvement, describing the experience as part of the pressure opposition figures face.

Obi argued that the country’s political climate has become increasingly hostile, making it difficult for opposition voices to operate freely. While he did not announce any change to his political plans, his remarks reflected growing concerns about security, democratic space and the personal risks associated with active politics in Nigeria.

His comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum. Although Obi has previously indicated his intention to remain active in national politics, he suggested that no political ambition is worth more than life itself, urging Nigerians to focus on building a country where democracy, justice and equal opportunities can thrive.
