Enzo Maresca has publicly apologised to Chelsea following his controversial departure from Stamford Bridge, admitting that leaving the club midway through the 2025/26 season caused significant disruption. His comments come shortly after Manchester City officially confirmed his appointment as the club’s new manager, bringing fresh attention to one of the most debated managerial exits in recent Premier League history.
The saga began in late December 2025 when Maresca made the decision to resign as Chelsea head coach despite having several years remaining on his contract. Chelsea confirmed his departure on January 1, 2026, stating that both parties had agreed it was the right time to part ways. At the time, the Blues were still competing for a UEFA Champions League place, having already won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup under the Italian manager.
Following his exit, speculation intensified that Manchester City had identified Maresca as the preferred successor to Pep Guardiola. The Italian was no stranger to the Etihad, having previously managed City’s Elite Development Squad before serving as Guardiola’s assistant during the club’s trophy-winning spell. His familiarity with City’s football philosophy made him the leading candidate for the role.
Manchester City officially appointed Maresca on June 29, 2026, on a three-year contract after reaching a compensation agreement with Chelsea reportedly worth around £17 million. Maresca also agreed to make a personal financial contribution as part of the settlement between the two clubs.
Chelsea responded with an unusually strong public statement, expressing disappointment over the timing of Maresca’s resignation. The club claimed his decision disrupted their campaign and contributed to a difficult second half of the season, eventually leading to a disappointing league finish. Chelsea also confirmed that a confidential settlement had been reached with both Manchester City and Maresca.
In response, Maresca issued a public apology, acknowledging the impact of his departure. He admitted that leaving Chelsea in the middle of the season had caused disruption, stressing that it was never his intention. The Italian thanked the club, its owners, players and supporters for the opportunity to manage Chelsea and said he would always value the success they achieved together.
Chelsea have since moved on by appointing Xabi Alonso as their new head coach, while Maresca begins the next chapter of his managerial career at Manchester City.
