Uganda’s military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked widespread outrage after publicly celebrating the detention of opposition politician and lawyer Erias Lukwago on social media. The incident has intensified concerns about political repression and the state of democracy in the East African nation.
Lukwago, a former mayor of Kampala and a prominent opposition figure, was reportedly taken from his home by armed security personnel while preparing legal action against Kainerugaba. The lawyer was seeking to serve court papers linked to threats allegedly made by the army chief against veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who is currently facing treason charges.
Critics say the detention reflects a growing crackdown on dissent under the government of Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986. Lukwago’s family described the arrest as a political kidnapping, while rights activists accused authorities of acting with impunity.
The controversy adds to mounting political tensions in Uganda, where opposition figures including Bobi Wine and Besigye have frequently accused the government of using security forces to intimidate critics. Observers warn that the latest incident could further damage confidence in the rule of law and deepen concerns over human rights and political freedoms in the country.
