As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, one of the biggest questions surrounding Brazil’s campaign is whether Neymar will be fit enough to play a meaningful role in the tournament. The Brazilian superstar has spent the past few weeks battling yet another injury setback, leaving fans anxiously waiting for updates on his condition as the Seleção pursue a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
The latest concern began on May 17 while Neymar was playing for Santos in a Brazilian league match against Coritiba. During Santos’ 3-0 defeat, the 34-year-old forward suffered what was initially believed to be a minor calf problem. However, after reporting to Brazil’s World Cup training camp, further medical examinations revealed a Grade 2 calf muscle injury, a more serious setback than first anticipated. Brazil’s medical team subsequently ruled him out of the team’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Panama and Egypt, immediately placing his availability for the tournament in doubt.
The injury arrived at an unfortunate time for Neymar, who had only recently worked his way back into the national team picture following a long recovery from the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered while playing for Brazil against Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier in October 2023. That knee injury sidelined him for an extended period and interrupted what had already been a challenging phase of his career.
Despite the latest setback, there have been encouraging signs. Recent MRI scans conducted by Brazil’s medical staff reportedly showed positive progress in Neymar’s recovery. The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed that the forward is responding well to treatment and remains on a specialised rehabilitation programme designed to accelerate his return without risking further damage.
However, Brazil’s coaching staff, led by Carlo Ancelotti, are proceeding cautiously. Reports suggest Neymar is unlikely to feature in Brazil’s opening World Cup match against Morocco, with the medical team prioritising his long-term fitness over rushing him back for the first game. Instead, there is growing optimism that he could return later in the group stage if his recovery continues as expected.
Neymar’s importance to Brazil extends far beyond his reputation. He remains the country’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 international goals and is one of the most experienced players in the squad. Across three previous World Cups, he has carried much of Brazil’s creative responsibility, producing memorable performances while helping the team reach the semi-finals in 2014 and the quarter-finals in subsequent tournaments.
For now, the good news for Brazilian supporters is that Neymar has not been ruled out of the tournament. The latest medical assessments indicate that recovery is progressing according to plan, even if there is still no confirmed return date.
