Fresh protests have broken out in Ibadan, Oyo State, as anger grows over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) launching an indefinite strike to demand urgent government action and the safe return of the victims.

The demonstration, which took place at key locations including Mokola Roundabout, saw protesters carrying placards with messages such as “Save Our Children” and “End Kidnapping in Oyo State.” They called on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted victims.

The protests come days after armed men invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, abducting dozens of pupils and teachers, including the principal of Community High School in Ahoro-Esinle. Reports indicate that the attack also resulted in fatalities, further deepening public outrage and fear across affected communities.

In response to the incident, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026. The union said the action was necessary to pressure authorities to secure the safe release of those still in captivity.

The NUT explained that the prolonged abduction has created fear among educators, disrupted confidence in the school system, and discouraged parents from sending their children to school. It also directed members to remain at home until further notice while continuing to demand urgent intervention from government and security agencies.

Security agencies have reportedly intensified rescue operations, with both state and federal authorities working to locate and free the victims. However, uncertainty remains over the whereabouts of those abducted, heightening anxiety among families and residents.

As protests continue and the strike takes effect, pressure is mounting on authorities to deliver results, restore confidence, and ensure that schools are safe for both pupils and teachers across the state.
