Police in the United Kingdom have launched an urgent investigation after the bodies of three women were recovered from the sea off Brighton beach in what authorities have described as a “tragic incident.”

Emergency services were called to Brighton seafront at around 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday following reports of concern for people in the water near Madeira Drive, a well-known stretch along the city’s coastline. Rescue teams, lifeboats, coastguard units, and a helicopter were deployed to the scene as part of a large-scale emergency response.

Sussex Police later confirmed that the bodies of three women had been recovered from the sea. Authorities said fast-moving investigations are now underway to establish the identities of the victims and determine exactly what happened.

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays described the situation as deeply distressing for the local community and said officers are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby properties and businesses as part of the inquiry. Police also confirmed that coastguard teams have completed an extensive search of the area and that no other individuals are believed to be missing.

The incident triggered a major emergency operation along Brighton beach, with large sections of the seafront cordoned off throughout the day. Witnesses reported seeing multiple police vehicles, RNLI lifeboats, ambulance crews, and rescue helicopters near the shoreline as authorities worked at the scene.

Officials from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said both Brighton and Shoreham lifeboat crews were dispatched shortly after 6 a.m. before later being stood down once recovery operations concluded. HM Coastguard also confirmed that rescue teams from several nearby coastal towns had joined the search effort.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the ages of the women or whether they were connected. Police have also not indicated whether foul play is suspected, though investigators say inquiries remain at an early stage.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey said she was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the deaths, offering condolences to the victims’ families and praising emergency responders for their efforts.

The tragedy has shocked residents in the coastal city, where early morning sea swimming is popular, particularly during warmer months. Local reports noted rough sea conditions and strong winds along the coast at the time of the incident, although investigators have not linked weather conditions to the deaths.

Police are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who may have been in the area during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The beach east of Black Rock car park remained closed as forensic teams and investigators continued their work.
