Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has resigned from the US Congress following a damning ethics investigation that found she committed more than 20 violations, including breaches of campaign finance laws and misuse of public funds.

The Florida Democrat stepped down just moments before the House Ethics Committee was due to meet and recommend disciplinary action over what it described as 25 violations of House rules and ethical standards. Her resignation effectively ended the committee’s jurisdiction over the case, prompting it to adjourn after formally reading her resignation letter.

The investigation alleged that Cherfilus-McCormick illegally diverted funds linked to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), redirecting money intended for disaster relief into her election campaign. Prosecutors claim that approximately $5 million in federal funds was funnelled through associates and relatives, who then returned the money as personal political donations.

Authorities further allege that some of the funds were used for personal luxury spending, including the purchase of a $109,000, three-carat yellow diamond ring. The accusations have intensified scrutiny over campaign finance practices and the handling of public funds by elected officials.

Cherfilus-McCormick has denied all allegations, describing the investigation as politically motivated. In a statement announcing her resignation, she called the probe a “witch hunt” and claimed she had not been given a fair opportunity to defend herself. She also argued that the timing of the ethics proceedings, which coincided with an ongoing criminal case, hindered her legal preparation.

Her departure marks the third resignation from Congress within a week under the threat of expulsion, a rare and serious measure in the United States House of Representatives. Lawmakers had been preparing to consider removing her from office, underscoring the severity of the findings.

Despite her resignation, Cherfilus-McCormick still faces federal criminal charges related to the alleged misuse of FEMA funds. Her trial, initially expected sooner, has been postponed until February 2027, ensuring the case will continue to unfold in the courts even as her congressional career comes to an abrupt end.
