Michael Carrick did not hold back in his reaction following Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Leeds United, describing key officiating decisions as “shocking” in a match that has quickly become one of the most talked about fixtures of the season.

The defeat, which took place at Old Trafford, marked a significant setback for Manchester United under Carrick, ending his strong run since taking charge earlier in 2026. Leeds stunned the home side early, with Noah Okafor scoring twice in the first half to put United on the back foot. Despite a spirited second-half response, including a goal from Casemiro, United were unable to recover from the early damage.

A major turning point in the match came when defender Lisandro Martínez was sent off in the second half after a VAR review for pulling an opponent’s hair. Carrick was visibly frustrated by the decision, later calling it one of the worst he had seen and insisting the incident lacked the aggression typically associated with a red card offence.

The United boss also pointed to what he believed was a foul in the build-up to Leeds’ opening goal, arguing that key moments went against his side and ultimately shaped the outcome of the match.

Beyond the controversy, Carrick acknowledged that his team failed to find rhythm, particularly in the opening stages. United struggled to impose themselves, allowing Leeds to take control early on; a factor that proved decisive despite their improved performance after the break.

The result is particularly significant given the historical context. Leeds’ victory marked their first league win at Old Trafford in decades, underlining the scale of the upset and adding further pressure on Carrick’s side as they continue their push for a top finish this season.

Since returning to Manchester United as head coach in January 2026, Carrick has overseen a notable turnaround, stabilising the team and reigniting their campaign. However, this defeat serves as a reminder of the challenges that remain, especially in maintaining consistency at the highest level.
