Ghanaian rapper and songwriter King Paluta has publicly criticised major music streaming service Boomplay, accusing the platform of “taking us for granted” and failing to properly support Ghanaian artists amid the digital era’s evolving music economy.
In a statement shared this week, Paluta expressed frustration over what he described as the poor treatment and undervaluation of creators on the platform, particularly when it comes to streaming revenue and visibility for local talent. The comments come amid ongoing debates in the Ghanaian music scene about fair compensation and recognition for artists whose songs generate millions of streams on digital platforms.
Paluta argued that many artists feel undervalued by streaming services, despite their music driving significant engagement and cultural influence. His remarks reflect wider concerns in the industry about whether digital platforms are doing enough to support and fairly remunerate creators from Africa’s fast-growing music markets.
The boom in streaming has unquestionably helped artists reach global audiences. Platforms like Boomplay have become central to music consumption across the continent and beyond, with millions of users accessing vast catalogues of African and international music. However, critiques over revenue distribution and promotional support have grown louder among artists and industry stakeholders who argue local stars are often sidelined compared with global acts.
King Paluta’s remarks come on the heels of a year in which he achieved substantial acclaim, with his music amassing tens of millions of streams on platforms including Boomplay, where he was among the most streamed artistes in 2024. Despite those accomplishments, he says issues around payment models and recognition persist.
As the Ghanaian music industry continues to expand, the conversation around fair artist compensation and digital platform accountability is expected to intensify. With feedback from creators like Paluta, stakeholders may push for reforms that ensure the region’s musical talent is rewarded proportionately for its contribution to the global streaming landscape.
