Emerging from the vibrant Nigerian hip-hop scene, ramping up behind the scenes, Fimí is ready to seize the spotlight with her debut EP titled ‘Fimí With The Flow’.
The project represents the culmination of a creative journey, setting the stage for a new voice in a genre long dominated by men.
Fimí’s musical origins trace back to her father’s church piano, an environment that nurtured her early affinity for rhythm, melody and lyricism. Initially, she adopted the moniker “Shawybee” and experimented with self-styled “Jesus Rapper” concepts, rapping over prerecorded beats as she honed her voice. Over time, she embraced her current stage name, Fimí (often stylised as “Fimí With The Flow” or “Flow Daddy”), signalling a shift into full-fledged artistry.
Her sound has drawn attention for blending traditional Nigerian cultural elements with modern rap sensibilities. For example, she has experimented with Yoruba poetic forms (Ewi) and vintage visuals, positioning herself not as someone chasing trends but building a distinct identity. Critics have described her as “a Nigerian femcee carving her own lane… confident, deliberate, refreshingly authentic.”
Fimí’s rap style is notable for its crisp wordplay, shifts in tempo and a willingness to integrate introspective themes rather than purely commercial hooks. Her visuals equally reflect a duality: at once traditional (iro and buba, Yoruba attire) and contemporary (tailored suits, bold styling). Among her notable singles are “Halo”, “Pookie” and “Beef”, titles that hint at her versatility and ambition.
While Fimí already has singles under her belt, the upcoming EP Fimí With The Flow carries significance: it will be her first formal extended body of work. In the landscape of Nigerian music, particularly hip-hop/rap — the leap from singles to a cohesive EP signals evolution from emerging talent to artist with full vision and structure.
In this sense, the EP serves as a statement: one that says Fimí is ready not only to participate in the rap game but to contribute meaningfully. Considering the media framing her as a new standout and the growing respect around her craft, the timing appears right for her to capitalize on momentum.
Though full details of track-listing, features or production credits remain under wraps, indications are strong that Fimí will maintain her blend of introspection and empowerment. She has spoken openly about wanting to explore more of her Yoruba heritage in music—and venture into adjacent genres like Fuji and Highlife, as natural extensions of her sound rather than detours.
On the promotional front, she has been featured on notable playlists (Spotify Africa’s “Fresh Finds”, Audiomack’s “Rap 234”) and received coverage in magazines profiling her as “building something steady and new.” These suggest that her team and she are positioning the EP for a broad impact rather than a niche drop.
For a female rapper in Nigeria, breaking through can be especially challenging due to the historically male-dominated rap space. Fimí’s rise adds to the growing wave of women in African hip-hop claiming space on their terms.
Moreover, as Nigerian music continues to make global waves, Afrobeats, Afro-fusion and related sounds gaining worldwide audiences, rap artists like Fimí represent the next frontier: hip-hop with local authenticity and global ambition. The release of her EP thus aligns with both the micro-journey of her career and the macro-trend of African rap artists stepping into broader recognition.
