When most people think about celebrity confessions, they expect talk of fame, fortune, or scandal. But for Nigerian singer-songwriter Adekunle Gold, a recent interview took a profoundly personal turn, one that revealed his deepest motivation and the stakes he places on family above all.
In a candid conversation, the “Obimo” crooner said:
“I can afford to be a failed musician, not a failed father or man. That’s not negotiable.”
This statement resonates with a vulnerability rarely exposed by music stars at the height of their careers. Rather than celebrating artistic success as the ultimate goal, Adekunle Gold frames his music as a vehicle. His true benchmark, he explained, is not chart positions or sold-out shows, it’s how he measures up as a husband to Simi and father to their daughter Adejare.
He went on to say that his family is his “centre,” and that providing his child with a better upbringing than he himself experienced is a major driving force in his life. “All I want is to do more for my daughter… It has to be way better,” he said.
At present, Adekunle Gold is an established star. He isn’t just trying to break into music, he’s already broken in. But this statement suggests he’s entering a new phase of his journey: one where his art serves his life, rather than his life serving his art.
