For Vezi Edwards, gospel music isn’t just a genre, it’s a calling, a lifestyle, and a channel for spreading light in dark times.
In a recent sit-down with Julie on Chat Space, the Nigerian-born, Houston-based artist opened up about his musical journey, his faith, and his latest single, Joy in My Heart.
Despite a stable career in banking, with a high-paying job that many would consider a dream, Vezi took a leap of faith. He left it all behind to pursue his passion for ministry and music, even when it meant earning far less.
“I felt like I was losing the essence of why I was created,” he explained. “It wasn’t about money. It was about touching lives, connecting with people, and living the way God called me to live.”
Vezi’s new single, Joy in My Heart, is deeply personal. Written during a season of discouragement and uncertainty, the song came to him in the most unexpected place, the shower. “I was at my lowest, ready to give up, and suddenly these words came: There is a joy in my heart that never comes to an end. At the time, I didn’t even feel joy, but I knew God was reminding me that His joy is strength, even in weakness.”
The track, filled with energy and rhythm, breaks away from the stereotype of gospel being slow or dull. It’s what Vezi calls “gospel groove”, music that uplifts the spirit but also gets people moving. His hope? That listeners find hope and strength, no matter what they’re facing. “I want people to profess joy into their situations. It’s more than a song, it’s a declaration.”
While music is his heartbeat, Vezi is also a businessman and consultant, balancing ministry with entrepreneurship. He enjoys traveling, socializing, and even admits he once had dreams of playing professional soccer.
Vezi is currently on tour, performing across Europe, with shows in Paris, the UK, Belgium, and more. An African tour is also in the works, alongside plans to release more singles and videos from his growing catalog of over 12 recorded tracks. While collaborations are on the horizon, Vezi is focused on first cementing his own sound and message.
As Vezi Edwards continues to share his story and his sound, one thing is certain, his music is more than melody; it’s ministry. With Joy in My Heart, he reminds the world that even in the hardest seasons, joy is not just possible, it’s promised.
