Donald Trump says a new agreement with Iran has been reached to end months of conflict and gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route. The announcement has sparked cautious optimism but also doubts over whether the deal will fully hold.
The reported framework includes a phased 60-day ceasefire, during which wider negotiations are expected to continue on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and regional security issues. Trump claims shipping activity is already resuming, though reports indicate movement through the strait remains limited and uneven.
Pakistan and Qatar are said to have played key mediating roles in facilitating talks between Washington and Tehran, highlighting growing regional involvement in the negotiations.
Despite the announcement, major uncertainties remain. The Strait of Hormuz has not fully reopened, shipping companies continue to warn of security risks, and Iran has indicated that several aspects of the agreement still require further negotiation.
While some international reactions have welcomed the potential de-escalation, analysts warn the deal remains fragile and could collapse without stronger enforcement and clearer commitments from both sides.
