Nigerian street-pop star Seyi Vibez has revealed that legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur played a key role in shaping the inspiration behind his reflective single “How Are You.”
Seyi Vibez, born Oluwaloseyi Afolabi Balogun, has become one of Nigeria’s most distinctive voices in the street-pop and Afrobeats scene. Known for blending Fuji influences, Yoruba lyricism, and deeply personal storytelling, the singer has built a reputation for songs that resonate emotionally with listeners. His track “How Are You” continues this tradition, combining heartfelt lyrics with a soulful melody that explores themes of love, vulnerability, and connection.
Speaking about the creative process behind the song, Seyi Vibez explained that Tupac’s legacy had a direct impact on how he approached the track. According to the singer, Tupac’s style of storytelling and emotional honesty inspired the tone and direction of “How Are You.” The American rap icon, widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in hip-hop history, was known for blending raw street narratives with introspective reflections about life, pain, and society.
That influence is evident in Seyi Vibez’s approach to music. Much like Tupac, he often uses his songs to reflect on real experiences and emotions rather than purely focusing on commercial themes. In “How Are You,” the singer channels a reflective mood, asking simple yet powerful questions about relationships and emotional wellbeing. The track captures a moment of vulnerability, demonstrating how artists across continents can draw inspiration from the same emotional core of music.
Beyond Tupac’s influence, Seyi Vibez has previously acknowledged multiple inspirations throughout his career. He has spoken about the impact of his upbringing in Ikorodu, Lagos, as well as the role other musicians played in motivating him to pursue music. These influences collectively shape the introspective and authentic sound that defines his artistry today.
The connection between Tupac and Seyi Vibez also reflects a broader cultural exchange between hip-hop and Afrobeats. For decades, hip-hop legends like Tupac have influenced artists worldwide, encouraging musicians to embrace storytelling, social commentary, and emotional depth. In turn, African artists have reinterpreted these ideas within their own cultural contexts, creating unique sounds that resonate globally.
For Seyi Vibez, acknowledging Tupac’s influence is not just a tribute to a musical icon, it is also a reminder of how music transcends borders. By channeling the spirit of honest storytelling that Tupac championed, he continues to shape a new era of Afrobeats where vulnerability, street wisdom, and melody coexist.
