Seven Dead in A66 Crash After Police Pursuit of Suspicious Vehicle

Seven people including two police officers, have died following a serious crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough after a police pursuit involving a suspicious vehicle. The collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday when a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction on the dual carriageway crashed head on into a marked Cleveland Police vehicle travelling in the correct direction. All five occupants of the Passat and both officers in the police car died.

The officers were identified as PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, 38. The other five victims were young men aged between 17 and 23. Police had been following the Passat after it was deemed suspicious and was believed to be displaying cloned number plates. The pursuit was reportedly ended after the vehicle began travelling the wrong way, but the fatal collision occurred approximately 10 seconds later.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate while inquiries continue. The incident has prompted widespread tributes to the two officers and the other victims. The A66 was closed while investigators examined the scene.
