Mexico has agreed to host Iran’s national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the United States declined to accommodate the squad, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The arrangement follows FIFA’s decision to relocate Iran’s team base camp to Tijuana, near the US border, as part of logistical adjustments for the tournament.
Although Iran will be based in Mexico, the team will still play its group-stage matches in the United States. FIFA confirmed that Iran’s original base in Tucson, Arizona, has been replaced due to complications linked to hosting arrangements, with Mexico stepping in to provide facilities instead.
The decision comes amid broader political sensitivities and security considerations involving Iran’s participation in the tournament. FIFA has maintained Iran’s place in the competition and is working to finalize team logistics ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
