Nigerian music star Peter Okoye, also know as Mr P and, one half of the legendary duo P-Square, has revealed that long before global fame and sold-out concerts, he was close to pursuing a professional career in football.
Growing up in Jos, Plateau State, Peter Okoye had a deep passion for football. Like many young Nigerians, he dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and dedicated significant time to training and developing his skills. During his youth, he joined the well-known Pepsi Football Academy, one of Nigeria’s most respected football development programs. The academy has produced several professional footballers over the years, making it a key stepping stone for aspiring athletes across the country.
According to Okoye, his football journey progressed to the point where he received a major opportunity that could have changed his future. While playing at the academy, he was reportedly offered the chance to join Plateau United F.C., a club in Nigeria’s professional football league. For many young players, such an opportunity represents the first real step toward a professional career in the sport.
Despite these promising prospects, Okoye explained that his dreams extended beyond playing locally. He hoped to build a football career in Europe, which is often seen as the pinnacle for African footballers seeking global recognition. Music ultimately became the path that defined his life. Alongside his twin brother, Paul Okoye, Peter formed the group P-Square in the late 1990s. The duo quickly rose to prominence with their energetic performances, innovative music videos, and a unique blend of Afropop, R&B, and dance music. Over the years, they produced numerous hit songs and became one of Africa’s most influential musical acts, dominating charts and performing on international stages.
Reflecting on his journey, Peter Okoye described his shift from football to music as a matter of destiny.
