The European Union has imposed new visa restrictions on Somali nationals, citing Somalia’s limited cooperation in accepting citizens ordered to leave EU countries. While the move is presented as a migration enforcement measure, it also highlights growing diplomatic tensions between Brussels and Mogadishu.
Under the new rules, Somali applicants will face longer visa processing times, restrictions on multiple-entry visas and the removal of some visa privileges for diplomatic passport holders. The EU says the measures are meant to encourage Somalia to cooperate more closely on migrant returns.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has rejected claims of non-cooperation, arguing that his government is willing to receive genuine Somali citizens but must first verify their identities. He says the Horn of Africa’s complex migration patterns make proper identification essential before deportations can take place.
The dispute underscores the difficult balance between border control and international cooperation. While European governments are under pressure to tighten migration policies, the new restrictions are likely to affect ordinary Somalis including students, business travellers and families who rely on easier access to Europe for legitimate reasons.
