Ecuador Manager Sebastián Beccacece Bids Farewell Following World Cup Exit, Ending Nearly Two Years In Charge

Ecuador’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey has come to an unexpected end, with head coach Sebastián Beccacece announcing his resignation shortly after the South American side’s elimination from the tournament. The Argentine tactician confirmed he would not continue in the role following Ecuador’s 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 32, bringing his tenure to a close less than two years after taking charge.

Beccacece was appointed Ecuador’s head coach in August 2024, succeeding Félix Sánchez after the 2024 Copa América. During his time in charge, he guided Ecuador through an impressive qualifying campaign and into the expanded 2026 World Cup, earning praise for building a disciplined, defensively organised side around young talents such as Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho.

Ecuador entered the World Cup in excellent form, arriving unbeaten in 19 matches and regarded by many as one of South America’s dark horses. However, their tournament proved inconsistent. They opened with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast, were held to a surprising 0-0 draw by tournament debutants Curaçao, before producing one of the competition’s biggest upsets with a spirited 2-1 victory over Germany, a result that secured their place in the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. Their campaign ultimately ended against Mexico, who claimed a deserved 2-0 victory to eliminate the Ecuadorians.

Speaking after the defeat, Beccacece admitted he was disappointed not to achieve his ambition of leading Ecuador to its best-ever World Cup finish. He explained that his contract had reached its conclusion following the tournament and said the team’s exit felt like the right moment to step away, despite expressing gratitude for the support he received from the players and the Ecuadorian Football Federation. Reports also suggest he felt he never fully connected with sections of the Ecuadorian fanbase, a factor that contributed to his decision.

Although Ecuador fell short of extending their World Cup run, Beccacece leaves behind a promising young squad that demonstrated resilience and quality throughout qualifying and at key moments during the tournament. His record of just three defeats in 24 matches reflects the progress made under his leadership, even if the World Cup ultimately ended in disappointment.
