A 69 year old Canadian tourist has died after a firearm was accidentally discharged during a guided safari experience in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
The incident occurred at a private concession-operated “bush braai” site near the Phabeni Gate, where visitors were taking part in an evening outdoor dining experience. According to park authorities, a private tour guide allegedly discharged a weapon accidentally, striking the tourist.
Emergency services responded quickly, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The South African National Parks authority expressed condolences to the family and confirmed that the matter is under police investigation.
Police have since arrested a 36 year old suspect in connection with the incident, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm.
The tragedy adds to growing concern over safety in Kruger National Park, which has recently experienced a series of violent incidents affecting both tourists and local communities, prompting renewed calls for tighter security measures.
