British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been accused by prosecutors of being “ruthless and calculated” in his alleged treatment of women, as his trial over multiple sexual offences began at Southwark Crown Court in London on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault involving six women. The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009, during the period when his career was growing from stand-up comedy into television presenting and Hollywood films. Brand denies all the charges.

Opening the prosecution’s case, barrister Riel Karmy Jones KC described Brand as a man who allegedly used charm and manipulation to pursue sexual encounters. She told the jury that he could be funny, courteous and likeable when it suited him, but allegedly became demanding and entitled when seeking sexual contact.

The prosecutor argued that Brand’s alleged behaviour reflected an overwhelming desire to satisfy his own sexual appetite, regardless of the women’s feelings or whether they consented. She also said the six women came forward independently and did not know one another.

The allegations relate to incidents said to have taken place in different settings, including hotel rooms, workplaces, a bar toilet and Brand’s home. In one allegation outlined in court, a woman said she was raped after meeting Brand following a show in Bournemouth in 1999. The prosecution told jurors that the woman had protested and did not consent to the alleged encounter.

The court also heard claims that Brand had spoken to a friend about wanting to have sex before leaving Bournemouth and later described an encounter as having “got a little out of hand”. These details form part of the prosecution’s account and will be considered as the trial progresses.

The charges cover a decade in which Brand became increasingly prominent in British entertainment. He later starred in Hollywood productions including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, while presenting television and radio programmes.

Brand arrived at court with his wife, Laura Gallacher, before the trial began. Asked how he felt, he said he felt “blessed” and expressed hope that the proceedings would lead to a good outcome for everyone involved. He has pleaded not guilty and remains on bail.

The case follows public allegations against Brand that gained widespread attention in 2023 after media investigations featured accounts from women accusing him of sexual misconduct. The current proceedings will allow the prosecution to present its evidence and give the defence an opportunity to challenge the allegations.

The trial is expected to last around six weeks. The allegations remain unproven, and Brand is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until the charges are established in court.
