Paul Pogba’s much-anticipated comeback at AS Monaco has suffered another major setback, with reports claiming the Ligue 1 club is preparing to part ways with the French midfielder after another injury setback.
Pogba joined Monaco in June 2025 on a two-year contract, returning to professional football after a lengthy absence caused by a doping suspension. The move was seen as a fresh start for the 2018 World Cup winner, who had endured a difficult final period at Juventus and a troubled second spell at Manchester United.
The French midfielder arrived at Monaco with the hope of rebuilding his career in familiar surroundings. Pogba had previously established himself as one of Europe’s leading midfielders during his first spell at Juventus, before returning to Manchester United in 2016 for a then-world-record transfer fee. His career also reached its peak internationally when he helped France win the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
However, injuries have continued to disrupt his efforts to regain his best form.
Pogba’s latest setback reportedly involves a thigh injury sustained during Monaco’s preparations in England. The problem has raised further concerns about his ability to remain consistently available, with reports suggesting that discussions over ending his Monaco contract had already been taking place before the latest injury.
The situation is a frustrating development for both the player and the club. Monaco had hoped Pogba’s experience, technical ability and leadership would strengthen their midfield, while the player needed regular football to rebuild his confidence and fitness after such a long period away from the game.
His time away from football followed a doping case during his second spell at Juventus. After serving his suspension, Pogba was released by the Italian club before Monaco offered him the opportunity to return to competitive football.
Instead of providing the uninterrupted comeback he had hoped for, his Monaco spell has once again been affected by physical problems.
If Monaco and Pogba agree to terminate the remaining portion of his contract, the midfielder would become a free agent and face another decision over the next stage of his career. At 33, he would likely need to convince another club that he can remain fit and contribute consistently before securing another opportunity at the highest level.
Despite the uncertainty, Pogba’s reputation remains significant. His achievements with Juventus, Manchester United and France have established him as one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, even though the latter part of his career has been dominated by setbacks.
Monaco have yet to officially confirm that Pogba’s contract has been terminated, meaning discussions are still ongoing. For now, however, the latest reports suggest that a comeback that was supposed to represent a new beginning could be coming to an unexpectedly early end.
