Iran to Receive Chinese Air Defence Missile Systems as Tehran Rebuilds Military Defences

Iran is expected to receive its first shipment of Chinese made shoulder fired air defence missile systems within weeks, according to multiple sources familiar with the deal. The reported delivery comes as Tehran moves to strengthen its military capabilities following months of conflict with the United States and Israel, which exposed weaknesses in its short-range air defence network.

The agreement is said to involve up to 400 man portable air defence systems (MANPADS), including the QW-12 and FN-16 missile launchers, with an estimated value of $60–70 million. These mobile systems are designed to target low flying aircraft, helicopters and drones, providing flexible battlefield protection that complements larger, fixed air defence systems. According to Reuters, the shipment is expected to transit through Pakistan before reaching Iran.

The reported purchase reflects Iran’s efforts to quickly reinforce its defences after sustained airstrikes damaged military infrastructure and highlighted vulnerabilities in protecting strategic sites. Analysts say portable missile systems could improve Iran’s ability to counter drone attacks and low-altitude aerial threats, which have played a significant role in recent military confrontations. Tehran is also believed to be interested in acquiring more advanced Chinese air defence models as part of a broader military modernisation programme.

China’s Foreign Ministry has denied any knowledge of the reported transfer, while Pakistani officials have also rejected suggestions that they are facilitating military shipments. Despite those denials, sources familiar with the negotiations say discussions between Tehran and Beijing have intensified as Iran seeks to rebuild its defensive capabilities while continuing to face international sanctions.

The development highlights the growing military relationship between Iran and China at a time of heightened instability in the Middle East. While supporters argue the acquisition is intended to strengthen Iran’s defensive posture, critics fear it could accelerate the regional arms race and further complicate diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
