Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy has reached another career-defining milestone after becoming the African artist with the highest monthly listeners in Spotify history, recording 46.84 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform. The achievement further cements his position as one of Africa’s biggest global music exports and reflects the growing international appeal of Afrobeats.
A major factor behind the surge in listeners has been the global success of “Dai Dai,” Burna Boy’s collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira for the official FIFA World Cup 2026 soundtrack. Released ahead of the tournament, the song quickly gained traction as one of the competition’s standout anthems, benefiting from the World Cup’s massive global audience. With football fans across continents streaming the official soundtrack, Burna Boy’s Spotify audience expanded significantly, helping him reach a record-breaking monthly listener count. FIFA has also highlighted the remarkable global performance of the tournament’s music campaign, with the soundtrack attracting hundreds of millions of streams worldwide.
The World Cup anthem has also introduced Burna Boy to new audiences who may not have previously followed his music. Many listeners who discovered him through “Dai Dai” have gone on to explore his catalogue, contributing to increased streams for some of his biggest hits, including “Last Last,” “On the Low,” “Ye,” and “City Boys.” Spotify’s monthly listener metric measures the number of unique users who listen to an artist over a 28-day period, making it one of the clearest indicators of an artist’s global reach.
Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, Burna Boy first rose to prominence in 2012 with his breakout single “Like to Party.” Over the years, he has developed a distinctive sound that blends Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and Afro-fusion, helping position African music on the global stage. Albums such as African Giant, Twice As Tall and I Told Them… earned widespread critical acclaim, while Twice As Tall won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2021, making him the first Nigerian solo artist to receive the honour.
Beyond his solo success, Burna Boy has consistently expanded his international profile through collaborations with artists including Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Stormzy, Travis Scott, Coldplay and J Balvin, as well as sold-out arena and stadium performances across Europe, North America and Africa. Those achievements, combined with the exposure generated by the FIFA World Cup, have helped fuel his latest Spotify milestone.
Burna Boy’s latest record is more than just another streaming achievement. It reflects years of steady global growth, strategic collaborations and the increasing influence of African music on the international stage.
