China has suspended more than 12,000 university degree programmes as part of a sweeping overhaul of its higher education system aimed at aligning graduates’ skills with the demands of an increasingly technology driven economy. The move has largely affected courses in arts, humanities, foreign languages, public administration, and management, while new programmes focused on artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced technology have been introduced.
According to education data, Chinese universities eliminated or suspended 12,200 undergraduate programmes between 2021 and 2025 and launched about 10,200 new courses during the same period. The changes impacted more than 30% of university programmes nationwide as authorities sought to tackle rising graduate unemployment and improve job prospects for students.
Officials say the restructuring is designed to better match academic training with labour market needs, particularly in sectors linked to innovation and emerging technologies. As a result, universities are placing greater emphasis on AI, data science, intelligent manufacturing, and other high-tech fields viewed as critical to China’s future economic growth.
The reforms come as China faces growing pressure to create employment opportunities for millions of graduates entering the workforce each year. While the shift has been welcomed by some as a necessary modernization of the education system, critics argue that reducing opportunities in humanities and social sciences could limit broader academic development and may not fully solve the country’s employment challenges.
The overhaul reflects China’s broader strategy of strengthening its position in emerging technologies and preparing a workforce equipped for the demands of the AI era, as countries around the world increasingly compete for technological leadership.
