The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced sweeping new rules for the 2027 Oscars, formally restricting the role of artificial intelligence in award eligibility while expanding opportunities for international films and reshaping key categories.
In a significant move reflecting growing industry concerns, the Academy announced that performances generated by artificial intelligence will not qualify for acting awards. Similarly, screenplays created by AI will be deemed ineligible, with the organization emphasizing that only work demonstrably performed and written by humans can compete for top honors.
The decision comes amid increasing debate in Hollywood over the use of generative AI technologies, which many fear could displace human creatives. While filmmakers are still permitted to use AI tools in production, the Academy made clear that “synthetic” actors or fully AI-written scripts will not be recognized. It also reserves the right to request additional information to verify that submitted works meet human authorship requirements.
Beyond AI restrictions, the Academy introduced notable reforms to the International Feature Film category. Traditionally limited to one submission per country, the category will now allow films to qualify independently if they win top awards at major global festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, or Sundance. Additionally, the Oscar will now be awarded directly to the film’s director rather than the submitting country, marking a shift toward recognizing individual creative achievement over national representation.
Other changes include allowing actors to receive multiple nominations in the same category for different performances, an unprecedented shift in Oscars history, and adjustments to various technical and creative categories aimed at modernizing the awards.
The updates come as the film industry grapples with rapid technological change and increasing globalization. By tightening rules around AI while broadening international access, the Academy appears to be balancing innovation with a renewed emphasis on human creativity.
The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2027, where these new rules will take effect, potentially reshaping how films are made, submitted, and recognized on Hollywood’s biggest stage.
