Nigeria Music Legend 2Baba and Music Giant Larry Gaaga, together known as The Kabal, have released their much-anticipated Rebirth EP.
This project not only underscores their decades-long presence in the Nigerian music scene but also signals an evolution, blending jazz, highlife, electronic touches, and soulful vocals into a refined soundscape.
For listeners, Rebirth feels like a masterclass in longevity. The EP’s lead single, “Bebe”, features the South African house trio Mi Casa, creating a graceful fusion where 2Baba’s signature wisdom-laden voice floats effortlessly over soulful trumpet calls and rhythmic house beats, a cross-continental love anthem that feels both classic and contemporary.
The heart of Rebirth lies in its sonic risk-taking. Rather than adhering strictly to mainstream Afrobeats trends, the duo experiments with jazz-inflected instrumentation and electronic production. One standout track, “Mad Over Hills,” showcases the deep chemistry between 2Baba and Gaaga: they move in sync, complementing each other’s space as if they’ve been building toward this moment their entire careers.
Behind this project is not just a musical partnership but a mentorship framework. Billing themselves as The Kabal, 2Baba and Larry Gaaga use their collective stature to create a creative home where other artists might be welcomed. It feels less like a comeback and more like a continuation — the work of two veterans who aren’t chasing youth culture, but rather making art on their own terms.
To understand how significant this EP is, it helps to reflect on both artists’ journey. 2Baba is a foundational figure in Afrobeats, known for his emotional storytelling and timeless hits. Meanwhile, Larry Gaaga is not just a performer but also an executive, a producer, curator, and Def Jam Africa A&R vice president. The two first teamed up on earlier songs like “Iworiwo” and later formed The Kabal, debuting officially as a duo with the single “Mad Over Hills,” which featured rap heavyweight Falz.
The release of Rebirth feels deeply symbolic. Rather than simply revisiting their glory days, 2Baba and Larry Gaaga are boldly redefining what musical relevance looks like in their maturity. With this EP, they claim that age isn’t a barrier to creativity — it’s a source of depth. The project is sophisticated, culturally rich, and emotionally resonant: a reminder that in African music, legends don’t fade away — they regenerate.
As The Kabal, 2Baba and Larry Gaaga invite fans — both longtime supporters and new listeners — to witness a rebirth: not just of their partnership, but of an era where experience meets innovation.
